If the gear isn’t right for you, we make returns simple. You have 30 days to send it back, and we don’t charge restocking fees just for the sake of it. No runaround, no hoops to jump through. We’d rather earn your trust by being straight with you than trap you in a purchase you don’t want.
Overland Odyssey Trail Verdict
Best For
• Large families or groups who need serious interior space — Everest 2 for couples/small families, Everest 4 for bigger crews
• Trucks and heavy-duty rack systems built to handle 250–300+ lb rooftop tents
• Overlanders building a true basecamp setup with blackout fabric and four-season performance
Skip If
• You’re running factory crossbars or a lighter SUV — these are extremely heavy platforms
• Low-profile daily driving and fuel efficiency matter more than interior space
• You want a minimalist wedge or lightweight clamshell style tent
What We Like
• Massive cantilever hard-shell design creates real multi-person sleeping space
• Blackout construction and insulation make it strong for all-season travel
• Gas-strut assisted opening keeps setup surprisingly fast for a tent this size
• Everest 2 offers a roomy couple/family layout, while Everest 4 pushes into full expedition territory
Tradeoffs
• 250 lb (Everest 2) and 300+ lb (Everest 4) mounting weights require serious rack setups
• Large footprint makes parking and ladder placement more important than with wedges
• Not ideal for quick weekend setups — built more for extended basecamp style trips

Extra Interior Comforts
The OVS XD Everest is designed with comfort in mind with it's many interior features.
We've taken the XD Cantilever on 4 camping trips this year. I felt we needed some real world experiences before I could write an informed review. The product is very well built but does have some drawbacks that may need mitigation.
Pros: Setup and take down only require minutes. The tent is sturdy and held up well in hail storms at Pike's Peak.
Cons:
1. The mattress is only 2 inch thick memory foam and feels like sleeping on plywood. We picked up a high quality 4 inch inflatable memory foam mattress to go over the top of the existing one to resolve the issue.
2. The unit is very compact so folding it up with a sleeping bag will work, unless you have an air mattress. We got around this by putting the original 2 inch mattress in a mattress vacuum bag and then vacuumed the air out to make it thin as possible and were able to fold up both mattresses into the tent and have it close. The sleeping bag made this too thick to close, so we're using vacuum bags for pillows and the sleeping bag which then have to travel in the truck.
3. The insulated inner liner should only be used for sub-zero camping trips. You lose access to several window zippers with it installed and is wholly unnecessary at temps above 30F.
4. It could really use two additional support rods from the lid to the front bar to keep water from pooling up after a rain storm. Getting cold water dumped down your back as you're trying to get out to answer the call of nature first thing in the morning is definitely not a fun experience.
We just ordered a small trailer to use as the platform for the tent to alleviate the storage contraints and to not have to pack up the truck every time we need to run to the store. We've found that having the ability to disconnect and go is a necessity for our camping style.
All in all, it is a solid product, but it does have some drawbacks that require some mitigation. Less
evious issue with a hard shell plastic tent and OVS took care of me. This XD tent is way better and the quality is very good. The aluminum shell is very good and I like that it has the ability for rail attachments. It’s great for me and the wife and we have used it 5 times so far with no issues. Zippers, hardware and material are high quality and I don’t see them breaking down soon. Most all tent mattresses are not very good but this one is at least way more comfortable than all the other ones I’ve had. Put a thick sleeping bag over it and it’s great. We have used the inner insulation attachment in temps of 18F with wind and it does make a big difference however, it’s still pretty cold so we pair this with a LF Bros diesel heater and it’s so hot we have to open the windows. Overall I like OVS because they stand behind their product and I’m very happy with my tent.
After much debate between OVS and iKamper, I decided to go with OVS and I'm so happy with my decision! I've used it on 4 separate camping trips and it's been super comfortable and easy to put up and down all by myself. It definitely is on the heavier side, but that's what sold me on it and so far my 1st gen Tacoma has handled it well. My hubby also loves the comfort of it, though I may add some extra cushion for him and we both loved how well the weather insulation kit worked. Excited to try it out during our camping trip in February with some snow. And I definitely can't wait for the annex room to be available :) watching my poor 6'2" hubby try to change his clothes in the tent was hilarious. Overall I believe I will stick with OVS for quite some time!
Holy moly, this tent is like a spaceship for camping! It's got this super cool aluminum shell – feels like I'm about to launch into space, not just camp. And the cantilever thingy? It's like magic, turning my rooftop into a mega cozy fort. Plus, blackout coating for ninja-level sleep and crossbars for strapping on snacks... I mean, gear. It's basically my grown-up treehouse, but on wheels.
I had one of the earlier models for years. Last weekend, I finally tested out this new one, and I'm impressed. I didn’t expect it to trap the heat so well...the sidewall material is on another level. I wanted to keep the old one for solo trips since it's a bit smaller, but after seeing the difference, there's no way I'm going back to the previous model for a second I’m selling it:D
