Full Tent Review
I am well pleased with this tent. Quality is great. But the mattress is too thin. Installation is simple and set up is quick. The black out works great. Camped in heavy rain with no leaks. The over hangs do a good job with the windows down. The new tent smell is very strong at first. The interior light is perfect. Comes with a lot of extras. If i could get a mattress upgrade this would easily be a 5 star review. Compared to other more expensive tents this tent is well worth the price. Materials are as good if not better than competitors. Would definitely buy again. I have the sherpa S3S tent mounted on a short bed Tacoma and it fits perfectly and rides great. Amazing how much more room I have in the bed of my truck now.
The Pros: It is one of the coolest tents out there! It came with all of the hardware needed for mounting. It is heavy and heavy duty. It is spacious. Plenty of room for a couple & two medium to large dogs. It is very quick and easy to setup. It has good airflow and is cool in the summer. It has good insulation and is warm in the fall/winter. Due to the folding action required to open and close the tent and the tent over hang, it provides a nice protected & shaded area under the tent. It has crossbars for additional roof top/tent storage if you need it, but you lose that area under the tent when it is open - or at least just watch your head. It has an interior USB LED light strip with a switch/dimmer. It has storage pockets so you don't lose your keys, etc. in the middle of the night. It has vents for A/C & Heater Ducting, power cables, etc when it is opened. The Cons: It is not light. You need a few friends or a winch & frame help to load and unload the tent from the roof. The mattress was too thin. I replaced it with a queen size 4.5" in/deflatable memory foam mattress. It worked out perfectly because it is very comfortable now and the smaller mattress footprint provides a little extra storage space for gear, pillows, etc. The insulation clips were not evenly spaced so on one side of the tent the insulation droops & sags. The insulation doesn't have any kind zip up or roll up opening for roof rainfly window so in the fall/winter you can't look up at the night sky in the tent. Due to the folding action required to open and close the tent and because there are no sealed pass through ports on the tent frame you have to install and remove any vent tubes & electric power cords each time you open and close the tent. The last thing you want to do when you buy a brand new $2000 tent is drill holes into it. There is not a good place to mount the ladder to the tent frame when driving, so make sure you have room somewhere in your setup for the ladder. If you have dogs, you will need the Ikamper dog steps for the ladder. While there are so many zippers there's not quite not enough. I wish there was 2 additional zippers so in a bind you could still open and close the windows, doors, tent, etc. Also it would have been nice to add black paracord to the zippers so it's easier to get the door open when you are on the ladder and the tent open when you are on the ground walk around unzipping. I pre-ordered and had to wait close to 6 months to get the tent, the launch kept getting pushed back. It was worth the wait! It didn't come with instructions, would've been nice. It would've been cool if there was an included exterior LED light strip for under the rain fly and/or under the tent when it is open, so the ladder is visible in the middle of night/dark. The XD accessories like the annex are not available and there's not a launch ETA. I know it will be worth the wait, but it would be nice though if the product line launch included all XD items like the awnings, annex, etc. and were available for purchase & pre-order at the same time.
First time using a rooftop tent. The Sherpa is super fast to setup. Comfortable sleeping pad.
